Official Languages Committee Travel to Winnipeg, Manitoba - February 2018
Senate committee engages Manitobans to modernize the Official Languages Act The Senate Committee on Official Languages were Winnipeg on a fact-finding mission and hosted public hearings as part of its study on modernizing the Official Languages Act. Senators heard from francophone and bilingual community members, experts in the immigration, culture and arts, education, and health sectors. The committee also heard from municipal and provincial government officials. Next year will mark the 50th anniversary of the adoption of the Official Languages Act. Accordingly, the committee has been seeking innovative ways to reach targeted segments of the population. Committee members are anxious to see how the modernization of the Act can contribute to the equality of both official languages.
Official Languages Committee Travel - Prince Edward Island 2017
In late September, committee members spent three days in Prince Edward Island. They hosted public hearings and met with students many between the ages of 14 and 25 years. The Senate Committee on Official languages is seeking input from young Canadians on how to update the Official Languages Act to reflect the realities of the 21st century.
Fisheries & Oceans Committee Travel - Nova Scotia 2016
Members of the committee went to Halifax, Sambro, Sidney and Greenwood in Nova Scotia to speak with government officials, members of the Canadian Forces, the Canadian Coast Guard, auxiliary groups and fishermen the first of several consultations for the committee’s study on maritime search and rescue operations.

Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal
Created in 2012 to mark the 60th anniversary of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s accession to the Throne as Queen of Canada, the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal was a tangible way for Canada to honour Her Majesty for her service to this country. At the same time, this commemorative medal served to honour significant contributions and achievements by Canadians. During the year of celebrations, 60 000 deserving Canadians were recognized.
